In 1967, Con Thien, a hill in the Quang Tri Province was nicknamed “Hill of Angels” because of the number of casualties that amounted by the end of the Vietnam war on this hill. In 1968, Khe Sanh was the site of one of the deadliest battles that left American forces under siege for 77 days. After the siege, the base was later abandoned and what was left was a scourge of despair. In 1994, the original founders of Abandoned Little Angels visited Khe Sanh, Hill of Angels, and other Vietnamese battlefields and had personally witnessed the unfortunate plight of many Vietnamese orphans that the war left. Some of the orphans begged on the streets, while others tried to futilely earn money by shining shoes, peddling, and selling drinks to tourists. Even though these orphans may be able to barely survive, the most unfortunate orphans that almost have no chance to live are the handicapped. These handicapped children range from missing limbs to mental illnesses. With barely any means of surviving, these children need the assistance from Catholic nuns and Buddhist Bhiksuni in order to subsist. Even with this help, the living conditions still have substandard levels of poverty that exists in a third world, as exemplified by the lack of hygiene and disease prevention methods. This firsthand experience prompted the formation of the Abandoned Little Angels to help the handicapped orphans by providing hope and opportunity to reach their full potential through basic care, therapy, and love.
